Logistics is undoubtedly one of the biggest sources of harmful emissions and at the same time one of the areas in which even small changes in processes or materials can have a major impact.
Eintracht Frankfurt has been working with RMD Logistics from Mainaschaff in the area of logistics since 2017. Together, a number of optimisations have been carried out in recent years with the aim of improving the ecological impact.
Sustainability in logistics
Reusable shipping boxes
We only use reusable shipping boxes for deliveries to the fan shops and the office. These have the following advantages:
- No consumption of cardboard packaging, which is often difficult to reuse
- By avoiding packaging waste, the amount of waste is reduced
- Costs are reduced
The aim in future is to use reusable boxes not only for internal orders, but also for all online shop orders from our fans.
Shipping material
The changeover of shipping materials in logistics has one of the biggest impacts on the environment. Cardboard boxes, filling material, packaging and adhesive tape are often not disposed of properly after receipt of the goods, which on the one hand causes a large amount of waste and on the other poses an enormous risk to nature and living creatures. To counteract this, we have decided in favour of the following measures:
- Filling material made from recycled paper
- Shipping bags made from paper instead of plastic
- Optimum utilisation of the packaging size
- Self-adhesive strips on the shipping box and bag
Warehouse
Sustainability in logistics not only includes the use of recyclable packaging materials, but also the logistics provider's building technology plays a role here. The following techniques have already been used and will be used in future to ensure sustainability in the warehouse:
- Use of green electricity
- Reducing water and energy consumption
- Use of sustainable heating systems
- LED technology
- Solar and photovoltaic systems
- Rainwater recovery
Shipping provider
Our shipping provider is our logistics partner DPD. They have been taking measures to protect the environment since 2006 and since 2012 every parcel has been shipped climate neutrally at no additional cost to the customer. DPD also contributes to the reduction of CO2 emissions by investing in innovation, technology and talent. The following goals are being pursued in order to ensure that the shipping route for all orders is particularly sustainable and environmentally friendly:
- Use of low-emission vehicles
- Use of cargo bikes for short distances
- Optimisation of delivery routes
- Reduce CO2 emissions per parcel
Digitisation
The use of RFID enables fast and automatic data capture with the help of transmitter and receiver units. The technology consists of a microchip (transponder) and a reader. By generating electromagnetic waves from the reader, data can be captured and forwarded quickly. The following goals will be pursued in future with the use of this technology:
- Minimise processing time per delivery
- Reduce packaging volume
- Saving resources
- Fast, cost-efficient and more flexible work
